Why this conversation matters

Show notes by Dani

Most boutique studios think their product is what sets them apart. A Barry's veteran with 13 years of scaling studios thinks the real edge is whether your staff will plunge the toilet.

Adam Shane, former chief development officer at Barry's and now franchise owner of Yoga Joint New York, joins Eric Malzone to explain why he's taking a suburban Florida brand into Manhattan and Brooklyn. Yoga Joint's studios in markets like Boca Raton regularly fill classes with 55 to 60 people, numbers Shane says he usually only sees in urban boutique fitness. He's signing 3,500 to 5,000 square foot spaces while most new boutique product shrinks to 1,500 to 2,500, starting with two studios on Park Avenue South and in Williamsburg. He also gets into why the boutique market feels frothy, how real estate shapes member experience, and why internal culture outlasts product differentiation.

Adam Shane is the franchise owner of Yoga Joint New York and spent 13 years with Barry's, where he started in 2011 as the brand's last domestic franchisee and rose to chief development officer.
